
A non – governmental organisation, Passion for life Initiative Nigeria (PFLI), has called for the creation of laws and enforcement of existing ones to protect women from discrimination and violence.
The Founder, Duchess Daughter Mabinton, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mabinton said that with the number of women in the various sectors in the country, they have strategic roles to play in nation building.
Mabinton expressed concern about violence against women in Nigeria, saying it has has become rampant and disturbing.
“Violence against women is now very rampant. We as an organisation seriously kick against things like that in our society.
“A woman is supposed to be a helpmate and not a slave. In as much as we respect our men as the head of the family it is not a ticket to treat a woman like a slave.
She said that the role of women in nation building cannot be over emphasise.
“We are examining what women can do to move Nigeria forward because women have to stand and speak up in the society.
“When a woman’s voice is heard, when she participates in decision making, and when she exercises leadership, she brings quality value to the nation,“she said.
She said that the orgnisation was currently empowering women across the nation, by establishing skills acquisition and empowerment centres.
“We are also working towards maintaining gullies and gutters within our immediate environment,” she said.
She also said that the organisation had embarked on the sinking of boreholes, donation of educational materials to schools to enhance learning.
Mabinton called on women to come out en masse to vote candidates of their choice in the 2023 general elections.
“We encourage people to go and get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
She urged women not to be intimidated but encouraged to vote their for the candidates of their choice.
Also speaking with NAN, Mrs Victoria Esa, Benue Coordinator, PFLI said that gender based violence was a global crises since the existence of human beings.
She said that the Covid-19 pandemic and other mobility restrictions had exposed many women and girls to abuse by men.
The coordinator called for the enforcement of existing laws to protect women from discrimination and violence like rape, trafficking, beating among others.(NAN)
